You are walking down a street in a faraway city.  All around you
are street vendors.  Oven the din you hear, "Magic Lamps, Magic
Lamps for sale."  You gape at the vendor suspiciously.
     "How do I know this is a magic lamp?"  You ask, taking the
lamp out of the man's hand.
     "That one has a genie," he says, taking it back.  "Let me show
you."  He rubs the lamp.
     A genie comes out the nozzle, looks at the vendor and says,
"Nor more wishes for you.  You've already had yours."  The genie
looks at you and says,  "But you have some coming.  I haven't done
you yet."
     The genie goes back into the lamp.
     "I'll take it," you say.  You buy the lamp and take it to your
room.  You rub the lamp.  Out pops the genie.
     "Ah, another Master.  You have lots of wishes coming.  What
would you like?"

     "I wish for more knowledge," you say.
     "About what?" asks the genie.
     "About you," you say.
     "No need to wish for that.  Just ask."
     "Okay.  Why were you so cheap?'
     "I'm afraid that for most people my magic misfires."
     "Can you tell me what I want most?"
     "Sure, hold on..."  The genie rushes you and crashes into you. 
You look around for where he went, but you can't find him.  Moments
later, he comes out.  "You are curious about a great many
things...More than the number of wishes I can grant."
     "How many is that?"
     "I'm not allow to say until you've used them up."
     "Can you give me a hint?"
     "Okay.  It's more than three usually."
     "What did I want the most?"
     "Well, I'll give you the top three in random order.  You want
a friend, an adventure and to experience life."
     "What do you want most?"
     "To be free, but If I am freed, someone must take my place."
     "Wait a minute!  You say your magic misfires?  Is there a way
for it not to?"
     "Yes, there is.  You have to look a certain way for it to
work."
     "Can you change me that way?"
     "The long way or the short way?"
     "Does it matter?"

     "The long way doesn't require much of my magic.  So there's
less chance for a mistake.  Of course, the long way there is a
chance that things might not work either."
     "Then I want..."

     "Never mind.  I'd rather have you use your magic when I'm sure
it will work properly.  Lead me in the proper direction."  The
genie takes you to a building.  You realize that either you aren't
in the same city or not the same time.  You see a newspaper and
pick it up.
     "New Revolutionary Mud Bath!  Cures All Disease!  Let's you be
whatever you want!  Eternal Fountain of Youth."  
     The Genie says, "This is as far as I go.  Take the lamp and
when you are done, rub the lamp.  I've already made an appointment
in your name.  Just go in and in a while, you'll be done."  You
walk in and the receptionist checks you in.  She leads you to an
informational waiting room.  You find out that they shave off all
your hair.  You bathe in the special Genetic Mud.  You will get out
and the mud will harden on the outside while the mud on the inside
fixes the DNA to what it's supposed to be.  When done, the mud will
harden and fall off.  The more change, the longer it takes.
     You are then taken to a room with four Mud Baths.  No one is
any of them.  The door closes behind you.  You don't know which to
enter.  Some Robot arms prep you.  By shaving, putting things in
you and then they leave.  You notice a conveyor belt by each tub. 
The are labeled "#1", "#2", "#3" and "#4" from left to right.  It
seems there's no getting out of here until you get in one.

     "So what now?"
     "What do you mean?"
     "What should I do now?"
     "Well, that depends.  If you want to have more accurate
wishes, then you need to get rid of the tail and get some legs. 
Then there'd be 100% chance your wish would come true.  Otherwise,
I'd say, take a swim."
     "Where?"  You look around for the first time.  You see an
ocean a little ways away.  "Well, I'm not going to get legs on land
anytime soon.  So I might as well take a swim.  Would you?"
indicating the ocean.
     "Okay.  But don't swim away."  Poof!  You are in the water.
     "Are you going to go with me?"
     "Only if you wish it."
     "I wish.  I wish."
     "Okay.  My lamp will become a necklace.  Rub once for above it
and twice if below."  Poof!  A necklace appears around your neck.
     You swim away from shore.  After a while you meet three other
mermaids.  The four of you become best friends.  One day you point
to an area you don't know.  "Why don't we go over there?"
     "That's where the seawitch lives.  It's dangerous!  She
doesn't like mermaids, but she has the most powerful magic."
     "What's over there?"  You ask, pointing the other direction.
     "That's her garden."

     You get into the tub and soak in the mud so that it totally
covers you.  After a while you feel difficulty in moving.  You step
on the conveyor belt.  The conveyor belt drops your rocky self in
front of a mirror.  A worker walks up and plugs you into a machine. 
You are unable to move.  All you can do is watch.  Days pass and
three times a day food gets forced into your body.  
     Slowly you begin to notice changes.  After about a month, you
notice that the spot of numb just above your butt isn't getting any
feeling.  You begin to wonder what makes the genie cast correct
magic.  Next the dirt starts falling off.  "Almost done," you think
excited.
     The next few days are the worst.  Not because of the waiting
(although that contributed a lot), but because of the difficulty
trying to figure out what's happened to you.  First you find out
that you have a cat's tail.  You are still human height.  Next come
the cat claws.  Then the private parts of a woman's body.  Boy, was
that shocker!  You've taken so long that they don't check on you
anymore.  Good thing, too.  You find out that you are two-thirds
human and two-thirds cat.  You seem to be a human woman where you
can tell you're a she and a cat everywhere else.
     You test out your new self and find it amazing.  If you went
into crime, you could be a true cat burglar.  You rub the lamp.
     "What?" asks the Genie.
     "I'm done," you tell him/her.
     "Oh, no.  That's not what you're supposed to look like.  You
only have a 75% chance now."

     "Can you change me back?"
     "Maybe.  But definitely not here."
     "Can you get me out of here?"
     "Nope.  That's up to you."  The door starts to open.
     "I'd better..."

     You begin to notice that you are getting wider.  Your whole
right side is numb.  The dirt on your right side falls off.  Slowly
over the time a woman looking pretty close to what you did emerges. 
Now, you are really wondering what's going on.  Shortly after she
emerges, you get the feeling back, and you start to come out from
beneath the dirt.
     "What's going on?" you wonder to yourself.
     "I don't know," comes from the woman.
     "What did you respond to?" you ask her.
     "Well, you asked..."
     "No.  I thought that..."  you tell her.  You are both in awe
by what just happened.  Shortly thereafter your dirt shell falls
off.  You are a complete male twin to the woman.  She has the lamp.
     You look in its direction.  "Yes.  I know about it.  At this
moment, I know everything you do.  Let's wait until we are out to
use it."
     The door opens, and you both hide behind the door.  A young
male intern comes in.  You explain that you both got done at the
same time.  He fetches you two pairs of men's clothing.  Obviously,
they don't have co-ed finishing areas.  You both put on the clothes
and make your escape.

     Nothing happens.  Day after day goes by but nothing seems to
be happening.  You begin to wonder what exactly you are supposed to
look like.  You think you see parts of your body expand but you're
not sure.  A month passes.  You find you can move your arms and
legs a little.  It's dry all around them.  So they must be done. 
You swing your arms and legs back and forth.  Finally, your arms
and legs are free!  You have great legs!  And arms!  You walk
around in small circles so as not to dislodge the hoses.  Another
long time passes.  The door opens and some clothes are dropped in
the room.  Finally, you are complete and the rest of your covering
falls off.  You are a woman!?!
     "Why did she do this?" and numerous other questions fly
through your mind.  You get dressed in a "one size fits everyone"
outfit.  It is not very flattering, but it does the job.
     You exit, find a secluded corner and rub the lamp. 
"Perfecto," says the Genie.  "Now, what do you want?"
     "I wish for..."

     You begin to wonder what you are going to look like.  A few
days later, you don't care.  In fact, on a daily basis you are
forgetting more and more.  This doesn't concern you much.  Days
pass.  Months pass.  Finally, you fall straight down.  This scares
you.  You cry.  When no one answers your cries, you stop.  You
crawl over to a shiny thing.  You grab it.  You see a pretty light. 
You crawl to it.  You see a baby crawling in the same direction you
are.

     "Let's check out her garden."
     "They say that it's dangerous."
     "How dangerous could it be?  It's just plants, right?"  You
convince them to go.  One of your friends starts laughing.  You
look at her and she has lots of fish around her.
     "They're all kissing me.  It tickles."  Another friend swims
up with thorns in her.
     "Oh, I have thorns?  I didn't notice.  --Ouch, don't pull them
out!  They hurt!"
     "Help!" cries the third.  "This loop has caught me and now
it's squeezing."
     "Help," says the first.   "I can't move!"
     "Oh, no!  I'm turning green!" exclaims the second.
     You try to help your friends, but you can't do anything.

     "I want to be what I want to be."
     "Huh?" asks the Genie.  "Oh, right."  Poof!  Nothings seems to
happen.  "That was your last wish."
     "What did you do to me?"
     "I did what you asked, changed you into a shape shifter. 
Right now there are only two things you can be.  Think of your old
self."  You do and are amazed.  "I have given you the ability to
look like whatever you see, but actually become it, as often as you
like, if you touch it.  And you will be able to remember
everything."
     You go around touching things and turning into them.  After a
few changes, you become weary.  "The more you change, the more
changes you'll be able to do.  Bye."  With that, she disappears
back into the lamp.
