This is a form letter response to unsolicited e-mail responding
to my 3/22/98 posting to the alt.barney.dinosaur.die.die.die
(a.f.4d) and related newsgroups entitled "Jihad in the Next

             WHY SENDING ME BARNEYSPAM IS A BAD IDEA

Greetings, Barneyspammer.

Any further communications from you regardless of content will be
treated by me as unsolicited spam and or harassment via wire as
defined amd prohibited by state and Federal (US) law. You may
assume that a spam filter with your account name is in place and
that further communications from your account may be directly
routed to a the new Barneylove "trash" area on my hard drive
unread and/or forwarded unread to your Internet Service Provider
along with a complaint. Threats of violence, should I bother to
go through the trash area and find any, will be reported to the
appropriate US State and Federal authorities.

In any case, there will be no further personal replies, you may
expect that any further mail you will get from this account will
be this or a future revision of this form letter.

Any e-mail I receive from you after this request from me to cease
further communication with me will be treated as a copyright
assignment of its contents to me personally. In the improbable
event that I bother to read it and find anything useful in the

including commercial and electronic rights for republication on
my personal or other Web sites, over Usenet, via newsgroup or

Since I have a book in progress on the Internet and write for
commercial publication on computer and related topics on
occasion, you are invited to ask yourself if you'd like to see

form of legal recourse against me or my publishers.

I will point out that a "spongie" by definition acts to defend
B&F or the program's creators from attack. The fact that you are
sending me hate mail or other e-mail intended to annoy for the
"crime" of attacking the program publically instead of B&F or
those who profit from it is further evidence that my public
statements about the "Jihad" and its members, particularly the
post you are presumably responding to, are in fact true.

If the "Jihad" were enemies of The Lyons Group(LLP) or seriously
interested in removing B&F programming from the marketplace as
their propaganda has indicated, your efforts would be directed
elsewhere.

When people express a desire for revenge, even in legal form in
the forms of threats to report actions against the enemies of an
entity based on hypothetical future conduct of that enemy, any
reasonable person may conclude that these people are the friends
and allies of this entity.

I now am completely convinced based on the hysterical responses
to my proposals to meaningfully protest B&F embodied in public
statements by its professed members that "The Jihad" that
proclaims itself as an association of "enemies of Barney" has
become effectively no more than an adult /  teen non-dues paying
appendage of the Barney Fan Club, too embarrassed to admit that
they're attached to Barney the way censors are frequently
attached to pornography, i.e., it is well known that censors
frequently have AMAZING porn collections.

Your letter has further reinforced that conclusion. While no one
is sorrier about this than I am, you did this to yourselves. I
will admit that trying to undo this to some extent was just
another form of tilting at windmills, but I believe a futile
cause or two once in a very long while is good for a person.

           MY PLANS WITH RESPECT TO BARNEY AND FRIENDS

I have said all I intend to say on the subject of Barney &
Friends (B&F) or The Lyons Group LLP or "The Jihad" in the form
of posts on the newsgroups described above. In fact, I have
desubscribed to these newsgroup, as your actions have no more
significance to me than they do to the rest of the world. Perhaps
I'll see an article on you in the Fringe Culture column at Wired
News, perhaps I'll even read it.

I have concluded that there is no significant public opposition
to the continuation of the B&F program on Usenet, and attempting
to organize any is futile at this time. I have also concluded
that any personal effort on my part to do anything significant
about the program or those who profit from it is simply not
cost-effective for me, as I have too many other demands on my
time at this point in my life. There are many social evils, I
have no obligation to attack any or all of them.

Therefore, I'm going to get on with my life and suggest you do
the same, whatever you might consider that to be. Live long and
prosper or whatever.

    CAN YOU EFFECTIVELY OPPOSE A SOCIAL EVIL VIA INTERNET?

Organizing effective opposition to a social evil is quite
possible on the Internet.

Greenpeace uses the Internet for mobilizing protest, presumably
including illegal acts of civil disobedience.

Alt.aol-sucks and its associated Web sites have done far more to
damage the credibility of AOL (not as much as AOL has, of course)
than the Jihad has in its years of existence. While I am not a
regular reader of that newsgroup, I have great respect for their
efforts. Would that the same were true of the Jihad.

At bottom, I think much of the hatred for me that has developed on
your newsgroups isn't based on my suggesting doing AWFUL, NASTY
things to the persons associated with B&F which might remove the
show permanently from distribution. I think it is due to my
suggesting to those with vestigial memories of what these
newsgroups and the "Jihad" were supposed to be for that if you
profess to detest and loathe something so much and you have
collectively said that this something is genuinely harmful to
children, that you get off your lazy butts and DO SOMETHING ABOUT
IT, if my suggestions, than something else other than whining.
Instead, you have decided to do something about me.

I now have said all I have to say to you in private. Whoever you
are, you may return to your herd now and continue your Purple
dreams, the possibilites of constructive dialogue with you have
been exhausted.

I was rather hoping that there would be a handful of people who
would understand what I said and review their own actions in that
light. I obviously overestimated the intelligence of these
newsgroups' users.
